What a week it has been for Swimming Waikato at the 2018 Swimming New Zealand Short Course Championships (25m) in Auckland.
Over the last week, the Waikato region picked up 34 National Age and Open titles, 26 Silver and 24 Bronze medals along with a large Waikato and National record haul.
The big talking point was the qualification of five Waikato Swimmers onto the NZ National Team for the upcoming Swimming World Short Course Championships in China in December 2018.
Congratulations to the following swimmers who have booked their ticket to China; Matt Hyde (Matamata), Gina McCarthy (Hillcrest), Paige Flynn (St Peter’s), Vanessa Ouwehand (St Peter’s) and Andrew Jeffcoat (Fairfield), as well as your individual Clubs and Coaches on selection for the World Championships.
The region saw several of its senior swimmers stepping up and racing without fear and putting in some life time best results. Their actions and positive attitude have been infectious throughout their respective camps and throughout the region, they have been fantastic ambassadors for their individual teams and for the upcoming stars in the Waikato.
Another big positive from the meet has been the performances of several our younger age-group swimmers, they have had a largely positive and professional attitude from Day 1 to 5 and have in many cases showed maturity beyond their years. Yes, there was a big medal tally for these swimmers, but the main reward has been the competitive experience and the valuable feedback that will help to support their future development into their senior competitive years.
