It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Swimming Waikato’s Life Member, Barry Kidd.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Barry’s family and close friends during this difficult time. A service to celebrate his life will be held today at the White Rose Chapel in Hamilton.
Barry’s journey in swimming began as a competitive member of the Cambridge Club, representing Waikato in various meets from 1956 to 1960. After retiring from competitive swimming in 1960, Barry transitioned to administrative roles, excelling as a New Zealand Technical Official.
Service Highlights:
1960-62: Committee member and Club Captain at Masterton Swimming Club.
1978: Awarded New Zealand Service Award.
1981: Awarded Waikato Service Award.
1982-86: Convenor of Waikato Technical Officials Panel.
1990: Technical Official at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland.
1995: Became a FINA International Referee.
1998: Technical Official at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and the International Paralympics Championships in Christchurch.
Barry’s contributions to the Hamilton Swimming Club were immense, serving as a Learn To Swim Coach, Technical Officials Convenor, Pool Manager, and Club Administrator. His dedication extended to modifying the old municipal pool to meet the club’s needs.
Barry’s technical expertise saw him officiate at Club, Regional, National, and International levels, including the Commonwealth Games and the Oceania Championships. His fondest memory was witnessing the dedication of athletes at the Paralympics Championships.
Barry’s nearly 50 years of service to swimming, from competing to coaching and officiating, have left an indelible mark on the sport. His volunteer spirit and passion for swimming have inspired many.
