Junior XLR8 Program
A program specifically designed for 12/u swimmers to
promote and recognise swimmer event versatility and ability
WHAT IS THE JUNIOR XLR8 PROGRAM?
Our Junior XLR8 Program is for our junior competitive and club swimmers (aged 12 and under). The program is designed to encourage swimmers to focus on acquiring skills across all the competitive strokes and distances, thus providing a balanced foundation for our young swimmers. The program is about ensuring diversity of competitive swimming and providing a balanced and long term attitude to our sport.
how it works
The XLR8 points system was created up by Clive Rushton when he was head coach at SNZ many years ago. It’s based heavily on the UK “Bagcats” system. The XLR8 points formula is 10 to the power of (4 – ($time / $base_time)). The base times change every year (like World Aquatics base times) and are recompiled from the TYM NZ results database. They are the average of the top 10 times for each age group, sex, stroke, and distance covering the last 10 years’ results. Base times are for LC only – SC times were converted to LC before sorting and averaging. So in the XLR8 points formula above, it is necessary to first convert any swimmer time from SC to LC using the standard SNZ conversions.

JUNIOR XLR8 BADGES
