Water Safety Strategy

Waikato Water Safety Strategy 2023-30

Swimming Waikato are proud partners of the Waikato Regional Water Safety Strategy and are committed to working collectively to lower the rate of preventable drownings in our region.

With our region’s beautiful coastlines, beaches, lakes and rivers, it makes sense that we equip our people and communities with the skills and knowledge to be in, on and around water safely.

“We believe firmly that every Kiwi possesses the inherent right to enjoy the rivers, beaches, and lakes of New Zealand while also having the essential knowledge to ensure their safety and the safety of others. Educating our Tamariki at the earliest opportunity not only equips them with the knowledge for safety but also opens doors to engaging in a variety of water-based activities, all of which contribute to long-lasting health and well-being benefits.”

– Darren Ward, CEO

The strategy is the result of a cross-sector multi-stakeholder approach to regional water safety; therefore it was able to address many of the contributing factors that cause drowning. Collaborating together not only enhanced comprehension of each stakeholder’s responsibilities but also provided a clearer understanding of the broader water safety landscape and our collective commitment to zero preventable drownings by 2030.
