This year, we are very excited to expand our primary school program from Hamilton City and Waikato District, into the Thames-Coromandel district.
What We Offer
- Water Safety lessons to Decile 1-5 primary schools with and without pools
- Professional development for teachers prior to Water Safety lessons commencing in school
- Two trained Water Safety facilitators to deliver poolside water competency lessons over five consecutive days
- Water Safety resources linked to NZC taught alongside the physical skills
- Funding up to $5,500 including fees per school annually (subject to criteria and funding available)
- One set (30) of Arena googles (subject to availability)

Which schools can apply? Current funding is available to decile 1-5 primary schools in Hamilton City, Waikato, and Thames Coromandel Districts.
What funding is available? The programme has been generously funded by WEL Energy Trust, Lotteries Grants Board and Sport New Zealand’s Tu Manawa fund (distributed by Sport Waikato). The maximum funding available per school is $5,500 (including admin fees) annually.
Are transport costs covered? Transport costs will be considered based on individual application and are included in the maximum funding available.
How does payment work? School Pool – Swimming Waikato will pay the Facilitators direct. Council Pool – Swimming Waikato will be pay the pool facility direct up to the maximum funding available, the school will pay the balance (if any) direct to the facility. Transport – The school will be invoiced direct from the transport provider. We will pay a portion of the transport cost to the school up to the maximum funding available to the school.
Who will be delivering the programme? The Regional Swimming and Water Safety Officer will deliver the initial teacher PLD session. Then, our trained facilitators will work with the class teachers on pool side to ensure maximum effect for students and teachers.
What if we need to cancel our lessons? If you wish to cancel your booking then you must give at least 1 weeks’ notice in writing. If a cancellation is made within one week of your proposed booking date you will be invoiced 50% of the total cost.

We currently have support via Swimming New Zealand, will this be affected? Swimming Waikato works with Swimming NZ to reach as many schools as possible across the region. If you are currently receiving support from Swimming NZ, you will not be eligible to apply to us for funding.
